WALTHAM, Mass. – The Haverford College men's fencing team traveled to Brandeis over the weekend for the Sollee Invitational. In what was the final competition before MACFA team fencing resumes, the Fords' day was highlighted by the sabrists taking down MIT and Brown during the final two rounds of fencing.

The reigning MACFA squad champion found its stride as the fencing progressed on Saturday, led by John Hare's 13 victories against just five defeats over the six rounds of fencing. Those 13 victories led all Haverford fencers as he guided the sabrists to squad wins with perfect 3-0 records against the Engineers and Bears. Hare was also 3-0 against Boston College to start the day, adding a pair of victories against NJIT and NYU.

Co-captain Gabriel Braun backed up his fellow sabrist with two more victories in the squad's fifth and sixth round squad wins. Braun also claimed two victories against host Brandeis as he won a bout in five of the six rounds, finishing his day with eight individual wins. The sabre squad combined for a team-best 21 victories despite being without the services of lineup regular David Parker.

Haverford's epeeists finished the day with 18 combined victories, just being edged out by 5-4 scores against Boston College and Brandeis. Kadan Lottick led his squad with eight victories, winning bouts in each of the final five rounds. He took two victories against NJIT, MIT, and Brown. Co-captain Ian Wheeler had two wins against NYU and Brandeis to finish his day with six individual victories. Adrian Ballard started his day on fire with a 3-0 record against Boston College to fuel that near squad victory. He later added another victory to the narrow squad defeat against Brandeis.

A balanced lineup told the story of the foilist's success as five different Haverford fencers won a bout for that squad. Alton Wiggers collected five of those victories, with two against MIT and Brown. Haverford suffered tough 5-4 setbacks against Boston College and MIT. In the tight matchup with Boston College, Jack Leighninger led the way with a perfect 3-0 record and added the only squad win against NJIT before being subbed out of the lineup for the final three rounds. Carter Langen's subsequent insertion into the lineup gave him an even 3-3 record during the final two rounds, including a 2-1 performance against MIT. With the lineup shuffling throughout the day, Aldis Gamble won his bout against Boston College while Russell Rivera found success against host Brandeis.

Men's fencing will travel to Johns Hopkins on Sunday, February 11 for the MACFA "A" vs. "C" fencing bouts. Action is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. The conference's "B" vs. "C" bouts are scheduled for the following weekend at NJIT.
