BALTIMORE – The Haverford College men's fencing team went 4-1 during the MACFA "A" vs. "C" bouts that were held at Johns Hopkins on Sunday. The Fords, who are now 7-2 overall in their MACFA bouts dating back to the Dan Arnstein '09 Invitational, defeated Lafayette, Drew, TCNJ, and Rutgers. The only blemish on an otherwise successful day came in the opening round against Ivy League foe Cornell.

Haverford's sabrists edged out the Big Red by a 5-4 margin, but it was not enough to overcome Cornell's advantages in both epee and foil. Sabre went on to win each of its five squad matchups. The Fords were victorious in each of the weapon squad matchups during convincing victories over Lafayette, TCNJ, and Rutgers. In the tightest team bout of the day, a 15-12 victory over Drew, strong showings from foil and sabre overcame an epee setback. Each of the weapon squads finished their respective days with winning records. The foilists and sabrists each tied for a team-best 30 victories against 15 defeats while the epeeists racked up 23 wins.

David Parker led his defending MACFA squad champion teammates with a team-best 11-4 record during the day in sabre. He was 2-1 overall in the narrow squad win against Cornell and finished with at least two wins during each of the five rounds of fencing. His unblemished round came against TCNJ. Gabriel Braun was 7-2 overall. He recorded three crucial wins against Drew and was also perfect a round later against TCNJ after starting his day with a victory against Cornell.

John Hare recorded the highest winning percentage among all Haverford fencers on his way to an 8-2 record. The sophomore fenced and won his only two bouts against Cornell and Drew, adding 2-1 records to his resume against Lafayette and Rutgers. Like Parker, Kagan Harris also fenced all five rounds for the sabre squad. He capped his day with two wins against Rutgers, adding bout wins against Lafayette and TCNJ to his team's score.

Three different foilists finished with nine individual wins. Jack Leighninger and Aldis Gamble were both 9-3 overall while Alton Wiggers also posted nine wins as the only foil fencer to compete in all five rounds. Gamble had a win in each of his four rounds in the lineup, sporting perfect 3-0 marks against Drew and TCNJ. Leighninger closed his day strong with 3-0 showcases against TCNJ and Rutgers. Wiggers recorded at least one victory in each of the five rounds, posting his perfect 3-0 record against TCNJ. Yan Yan Xie also went 3-0 in his only appearance in the lineup against Lafayette. Foil's success came despite Russell Rivera switching over to epee after the opening round.

Foil's loss was certainly to the overall team's benefit as Rivera showed no signs of unfamiliarity in the epee competition. Fencing epee during the final four rounds, he led that weapon squad with eight wins against just four defeats. He was 3-0 against TCNJ after a quick start with 2-1 records against Lafayette and Drew. Adrian Ballard also won eight bouts. He was 3-0 against TCNJ and Rutgers, adding two more victories against Lafayette. Devin Louis also shook off a tough start to his day with two wins against both Lafayette and TCNJ. The senior capped his day with a victory against Rutgers. Kadan Lottick notched epee's only two wins against Cornell during his only round in the squad lineup.

Men's fencing will wrap up MACFA team competition this coming Sunday in the conference's "B" vs. "C" bouts. That final round of Haverford's matchups will be hosted by NJIT. Fencing this coming weekend is slated to get underway at 10 a.m. in New Jersey.
