Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Release

PHILADELPHIA – Gabriel Braun has been voted the 2018-19 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area at-large team Performer of the Year. The all-area team of 10 individuals is voted on by the sports information offices of the 29 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Braun was named to the team for the third straight season and was the overall winner for the first time in his career.

The at-large teams take into account those student-athletes from area schools whose sports do not have a dedicated Academic All-Area team. In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better.

Braun is the 17th student-athlete in program history to be named the Academic All-Area Performer of the Year for a specific sport as the last person to do so was classmate Graham Peet who earned this award for both cross country and track & field a season ago. Braun is the first-ever Haverford student-athlete to be named men's at-large performer of the year. Fellow fencer Emma Buckingham '10 was a two-time performer of the year selection on the women's side.

A two-time captain, Braun is a three-time regional qualifier who has fenced both epee and sabre during his career. A customary sabre fencer, Braun transitioned to a leadership role on the epee squad during the spring of his senior season to help bolster that squad during the postseason. Braun was also recently announced as an Amber Scholar-Athlete at Haverford, an honor bestowed upon the senior student-athletes with the top-16 highest GPAs. He will graduate from Haverford this spring with a chemistry major and French minor.

A total of four Haverford student-athletes were named to the men's at-large academic all-area team. He joined squash players Fitz Dougherty and Yash Singh, along with cricket captain Nathaniel Rolfe. The four honorees from the Fords tied Drexel for the most representatives on the men's side.
