Gabriel Braun Recognized on Second Straight CoSIDA All-District Team

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College senior men's fencer Gabriel Braun has been named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District Men's At-Large team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

This award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom. The at-large team takes into account schools that do not have their own dedicated team for a particular sport. Along with the other first-team academic all-district selections, Braun will now advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, with first and second-team Academic All-America honorees to be announced in June.

A chemistry major (biochemistry concentration), with a minor in French, Braun was also one of 16 Haverford student-athletes who were recognized as Ambler Scholar-Athletes for having one of the top 16 cumulative grade point averages among all senior student-athletes. In addition to his fencing prowess, Braun racked up many awards and is earning this CoSIDA award for the second straight season. He has also been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team during each of his eligible seasons and garnered performer of the year honors on the at-large ballot during his senior campaign. He was also named Haverford's MacIntosh Award recipient in the fall of 2016 for being the top student-athlete in the first-year class.

On the fencing strips, Braun led the sabre squad to a gold medal at the 2017 MACFA Championships and helped the Fords earn silver just one year later. He was also an individual finalist at the Temple Open and MACFA Championships throughout his career. A three-time regional qualifier in sabre coming into the season, Haverford's two-time team captain, and a de facto leader since stepping onto campus, once again showed his leadership by switching to the epee discipline and sacrificed personal accolades in the midst of his senior season because he knew this would be the most beneficial thing for the team. Even though he was fencing a new weapon, Braun quickly acclimated himself to epee fencing and helped the Fords with several huge squad and team victories throughout the spring semester.
