Men's Fencing Earns Three Wins at D'Arnstein Invitational
HAVERFORD, Pa. - On Saturday at the D'Arnstein '09 Invitational inside Alumni Field House on the Haverford campus, the Haverford College men's fencing team won their first three matches against William and Mary, Navy and Swarthmore, before dropping bouts to Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland.

The men's foil squad showed their versatility as they carried their team for the second early-season tournament in a row. Undefeated in their first three matches of the day, the men's foil squad only lost to Johns Hopkins, 6-3, before bouncing back to drub the Maryland Terrapins by an 8-1 final in their defense of the home turf on Saturday.

This time the charge was led by first-year Michael Pyo, whose 11-1 record led all weapons on the day, followed closely by hometown hero Andrew Strayer at 10-0. Jax Wittenberg and Henry Fedonchik each kicked in eight wins to put the foil squad at 13-1 for the season so far.

Vivek Veluvali led the epee squad with an 8-1 record, including two of three at four-all, as the epee squad was the strongest against Hopkins when they eked out four of the seven total team victories.

For sabre, the least experienced squad on the team, Deep Patel and Jack Greff each held down respectable 5-6 records on the day.

The men's fencing team will break for the winter holidays and will next compete at the Penn State Invitational in University Park, Pa. on Sunday, January 15, against the host Nittany Lions, as well as formidable sides from UNC, Duke, Yale, Penn, and Columbia.
