GREENWICH, Conn. – The tandem of Christian Clay and Jake Maldonado netted two goals apiece for Haverford College's men's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon, but the Fords were undone by No. 20 St. Lawrence University, 11-5, in a non-conference, neutral-site loss at The Brunswick School.
Clay collected three goals in Haverford's opening-season loss last weekend. Saturday's defeat pushes Haverford's overall record to 0-2 while the Saints open their season with a victory.
The two teams got off to slow starts offensively as the score was just 2-1 in St. Lawrence's favor nearing the end of the first quarter Saturday. The Saints scored the opening two goals but Maldonado cut the lead in half with an unassisted tally at the 3:19 mark of the period.
That one-goal deficit would be as close as the Fords would get over the rest of the afternoon as St. Lawrence scored five unanswered goals over a 10 minute, 26 second span that carried over from the end of the first quarter into the second.
Dan LoSardo's second goal of the year for Haverford finally ended the Saints' run but two more St. Lawrence goals sandwiched between a Clay goal at the 44-second mark and LoSardo's marker left the Fords trailing 9-3 at the half.
Clay netted the only goal of the third period and Maldonado added a goal in the fourth, but the Fords were unable to claw back from their halftime deficit to the nationally-ranked Saints.
Haverford earned eight man-up opportunities during the game but picked up just one goal, LoSardo's second-period score, while surrendering only two extra-man opportunities to the Saints.
The Fords also won 6-of-8 face-offs during the second quarter and accumulated six shots but came away with just the LoSardo tally.
Andrew Dalke finished the day winning 10-of-19 face-offs for the Fords with teammate Scott Chanelli winning his only draw at the dot. Chanelli ended the contest with a team-high four caused turnovers and registered five ground balls.
Freshman goalie Eric Caliendo made seven saves against the Saints but took the loss after surrendering all 11 goals. St. Lawrence's Jeff Goeke earned the win between the pipes, coming up with 12 saves.
Haverford returns to campus for its next game, a March 6 non-conference date against visiting York College in the 7 p.m. home opener for the Fords.
