Furious rally falls short in final minute at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILE, Pa. - A furious fourth-period come back fell just short Wednesday night for Haverford College's men's lacrosse team as the Fords used six unanswered goals to pull within one of host Ursinus College, but fell just short in completing the rally when the Bears scored with one minute remaining and hung on for a 10-8 Centennial Conference victory.

Haverford (6-7, 3-4 CC) tied the game at 2-2 midway through the second period on a Henry Millson goal but Ursinus (8-5, 2-5) reeled off the final three goals of the period to take a 5-2 lead into the break, then scored three in the third and the opening goal of the fourth period to pull ahead 9-2 with a little more than 11 minutes remaining.

Christian Clay sparked the Haverford rally with a goal off a Jake Maldonado feed at the 10:57 mark. Millson came through with the next two goal less than a minute apart then Clay notched another with 4:43 left to play to make the score 9-6.

Ursinus held onto its three-goal advantage for the next two minutes and looked like it might escape further damage but Haverford wasn't done for the night as Nick Schoen took a pass from Millson and buried a shot into the net as the clock ticked past the two-minute mark.

Trailing now by just two, head coach Colin Bathory sent Scott Chanelli to the faceoff dot and the senior defender rewarded his coach with not only a faceoff win, and not just another ground ball pickup. Chanelli raced down field and launched a low bouncer that beat Ursinus goalie Brian Neff to pull Haverford within one with 105 seconds left.

The host Bears finally gained possession back with a faceoff win and scored the back-breaking goal at the 1-minute mark to ice the win.

Millson finished with a team-high three goals with Clay adding a pair. Jack Bodine scored the opening goal of the night for Haverford in the first period.

The Fords finished the night with an advantage in shots, 37-27, but were 0-for-5 in extra-man opportunities. The Bears also owned the edge at the dot winning 14-of-21 faceoffs.

Haverford closes out its season Saturday at home on the turf of Swan Field with a Centennial match-up against Swarthmore College. Seven seniors will play their final game as Fords in the rivalry contest against the visiting Garnet.
