Caliendo ties season high for saves in loss to #19 Bullets

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Goalkeeper Eric Caliendo posted 16 saves Saturday afternoon for Haverford College's men's lacrosse team, but the host Fords weren't able to pull off the upset as No. 19 Gettysburg College took home a 10-4 Centennial Conference victory from Swan Field in the league opener for both squads.

Haverford (1-6, 0-1 CC) only trailed the Bullets (4-3, 1-0) by a count of 5-2 at the half, and 7-2 after the third period but it could have been a greater deficit for the Fords if it wasn't for Caliendo who made 10 of his saves in the third period.

Gettysburg out shot Haverford 19-2 in the third but Caliendo's stand in the cage helped limit the damage to just a pair of Bullets goals.

After the visitors broke through for a pair of scores one minute apart near the midpoint of the fourth the Fords responded with two goals to draw closer, but it wasn't enough as Gettysburg held on for the win.

The only scoring in the first period came off two Gettysburg goals within the first minutes of the game, but the lead stretched to 4-0 with two more unanswered goals in the second.

Christian Clay got Haverford on the board with his 11th of the season and then, six seconds after a Gettysburg goal, Jack Bodine scored the first of two on the day to pull the Fords to within three late in the second period.

Caliendo was under attack in the third but stood tall to keep the Fords in the game, but the two he surrendered in the third were followed by two more in the fourth to give the Bullets their second four-goal run of the game.

Bodine notched his second with 5:11 to play and then the Fords added another when Gettysburg goalie Jon Maddalone misplayed a save into his own goal at the 2:06 mark.

That would close out the Haverford scoring, though, and put a halt to the Fords' upset bid.

Clay led the Fords with four ground balls while five different players recorded one caused turnover.

Gettysburg's Robby Maddux led all scorers with four goals and teammate Jack Harvazinski scooped up a game-high five ground balls. Maddalone finished with eight saves in the win between the pipes for the Bullets.

Haverford continues with Centennial play in their next outing, a Wednesday-night game at No. 7 Washington College.
