Muhlenberg survives late surge from Fords

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Brandon Boccellari netted his second hat trick of the season for the Haverford College men's lacrosse team, but it was not quite enough as Muhlenberg College edged the Fords, 11-8, in a Centennial Conference matchup at Scotty Wood Stadium on Wednesday night.

Haverford fired nine more shots than the Mules in the fourth quarter (13-4), but Muhlenberg goalie Adam Schlauch thwarted the Fords' furious attack in the final period to secure the win for the home-standing Mules.

Six different players scored for the Fords in the game and eight players recorded at least one point. Boccellari's three scores led the way for the visitors and teammate Jack Russ placed two shots into the back of the net.

Christian Clay dished out an assist and now leads the Fords with eight helpers on the year. Chris Christensen fired 10 shots, scored a goal, and picked up two ground balls.

Goalkeeper Eric Caliendo made 14 saves in the loss and has now recorded double-digit saves in seven straight games.

Haverford (1-10, 0-5 CC) got on the board early with Boccellari's first score just 57 seconds into the action. Muhlenberg followed with a 7-2 run over the next 28 minutes, before Christensen netted a goal with eight seconds remaining before halftime intermission, decreasing the Mules' lead to 7-4 at the break.

The Fords won the third quarter 3-2, powered by two scores from Boccellari, but Muhlenberg (2-9, 1-4) took the fourth, 2-1, to finalize the 11-8 score.

Haverford now has a 10-day break to prepare for its next contest. The Fords will host the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday, April 19, at Swan Field. The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
