Men’s soccer downed by Wheaton, 3-1

NORTON, Mass. – The Haverford College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to host Wheaton (Mass.) College Tuesday afternoon. The Fords pulled within one goal with 15 minutes remaining, but could get no closer.

Wheaton (8-3-2) held a substantial, 22-8, advantage in shots. Despite just eight shots the Fords managed to get five of those on goal.

The Lyons scored first when Josh Solomon scored from 15 yards out on a cross from Cecil Jeffrey. For the next 55 minutes the game went scoreless despite 18 shots. Jamey Applegate came up with three saves in that span while Wheaton's Chris Smart made two.

Wheaton's Alex Redding broke the cold streak in the 72nd minute on a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net. Haverford (6-3-2) got on the board in the 75th minute thanks to David Restrepo's tally. Restrepo was set up off a free kick on a double-assist from Alejandro Rettig y Martinez and Trevor Barlowe. The Fords' last chance to tie the score came a minute later, but Charlie Espinosa's shot off a corner was blocked.

The Lyons moved the ball down field and Will Nesbit scored an open-net goal in the final minute for good measure.

Applegate made five saves in the loss while Smart had four stops.

The Fords continue their trip through Massachusetts Thursday when they take on Lasell College at 4 p.m.
