Men’s soccer plays to 2-2 draw versus Marlins

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – After a solid effort against the fifth-ranked team in the nation a day earlier, the Haverford College men's soccer team kept that momentum going in Sunday's 2-2 double overtime tie against Virginia Wesleyan College at the Christopher Newport Tournament.

Although Virginia Wesleyan (0-2-1) held a 22-10 shots advantage, the Fords hung tough. Jamey Applegate stopped seven of the nine shots he faced, playing all 110 minutes in goal. The defense managed to hold the Marlins to just one shot on goal in the final 25 minutes of the match.

Haverford (0-1-1) struck first as Max Stossel booted in a pass from David Restrepo in the 20th minute. The Fords took that lead into the locker room at halftime, but the Marlins tied the score in the 63rd minute when Jordan Elgin dribbled past two Haverford defenders and snuck his shot past Applegate.

Two minutes later a costly foul in the box by Virginia Wesleyan resulted in a yellow card. Matt Gorski's penalty kick found the back of the net to put HC in front again. In the 75th minute the Marlins scored off a corner kick as Adam Stringer's one-touch on an assist from Chris Luce tied the score. In the final 15 minutes of regulation both teams took two shots, but only Stossel's shot in the 86th minute was on goal.

The first overtime went relatively quiet with just two shots and one corner kick, but the second extra frame saw more action. Haverford could not connect on a corner in the 102nd minute and one minute later, Applegate came up with a save on a shot by John McKenzie. Five more shots were taken in the final six minutes with none finding their way on goal.

The Fords will be in action again next weekend when they host the Jimmy Mills Tournament at Walton Field. Saturday HC hosts Cabrini College while Sunday the Fords take on Gwynedd-Mercy College. Both matches begin at 2:30 p.m.
