HAVERFORD, Pa. – Goals by Tyler Freeman and Matt Gorski and a stout defense that allowed only a single shot on goal pushed the Haverford College men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over visiting Cabrini College in a non-conference match-up Saturday afternoon at Walton Field on the opening day of the 20th Annual Jimmy Mills Tournament.
The victory was the first of the season for Haverford (1-1-1) while the Cavaliers (0-4), who captured the Jimmy Mills title last year, remained winless.
Freeman's first goal of the year came in the 25th minute off a pass from Alejandro Rettig y Martinez. Freeman cut back from the goal line to receive Rettig y Martinez' pass then pounded a shot into the back of the net from six yards out.
The insurance goal late in the second half was Gorski's second marker of the season.
David Restrepo was pulled down just outside the box resulting in a yellow card for the Cabrini defender and a free kick for the Haverford midfielder. His shot rebounded off the Cavalier wall 10 yards in front of him and Gorski was able to collect the ball and fire a shot into the lower left corner for a two-goal lead with five minutes remaining.
Ten minutes earlier, when the Fords were clinging to their one-goal margin, Cabrini smoked a free kick toward the Haverford goal from about 30 yards out but Fords netminder Jamey Applegate was able to out jump the throng of players in front of him to punch the ball away maintaining the Fords' lead.
Haverford out shot the visitors by an 18-9 margin and limited the Cavaliers to just one shot on goal while registering four on Cabrini goalkeeper Eric Nowicki who finished with a pair of saves in the loss.
In the opening game of the tournament Saturday Alvernia University defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College by a 3-1 score.
The Jimmy Mills tournament concludes Sunday with Alvernia squaring off against Cabrini at Noon followed by the Fords and Gwynedd-Mercy at approximately 2:30 p.m.
