Men’s soccer takes Gwynedd-Mercy, 6-0, for Jimmy Mills title

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's soccer team excelled in all facets of Sunday's 6-0 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy College. The Fords held a lopsided 37-6 advantage in shots and took 10 corner kicks to none for the Golden Griffins.

With the win, the Fords won the 2010 Jimmy Mills Tournament championship. Alvernia University defeated Cabrini College, 1-0, in Sunday's first match.

Haverford (2-1-1) scored its first goal in the 10th minute when David Restrepo received a pass from Tyler Freeman on the left wing and booted it home from 25 yards out. The Fords wasted little time expanding their lead as they got on the board again in the 21st minute. Matt Gorski lobbed a pass in front of Alejandro Rettig y Martinez who collected the ball in the box and scored.

The Scarlet and Black tacked on four goals in the final 45 minutes with two coming early in the half and the last two just past the midway point. Gorski set up Max Stossel with a pass inside the box for the third goal in the 60th minute. Five minutes later Rettig y Martinez scored his second goal of the day by heading in a rebound off the post.

Julien Calas had a hand in the final two tallies, scoring an unassisted goal in the 78th minute, then setting up Mike Levine for his first collegiate goal one minute later. Calas sent a perfect cross from the right corner into the box that Levine headed in for the game's final goal.

It was the first time Haverford scored six goals in a game since Sept. 6, 2003 when the Fords defeated Neumann University, 7-0.

Jamey Applegate had a relatively quiet day in goal, making just two saves in the first half. He picked up his second win of the season, playing 68 minutes in goal. Nick Kahn logged the final 21:55 to preserve the shutout. Mike Leonard suffered the loss for Gwynedd-Mercy (0-5-1), allowing all six goals and making seven saves.

Gorski was named MVP of the tournament. He tallied one goal and two assists on the weekend. The following players were named to the all-tournament team: Applegate (Haverford), Matt Johnson (Haverford), Rettig y Martinez (Haverford), Stossel (Haverford), Kyle Mellon (Alvernia), Morgan Davidheiser (Alvernia), Kyle Martyn (Alvernia), Gabe Kuhn (Cabrini), Jim Mattock (Cabrini), Christian Pembrooke (Gwynedd-Mercy) and Nick Keba (Gwynedd-Mercy).
