HAVERFORD, Pa. - Sustained offensive pressure in second-half action wasn't able to bring the tying goal for Haverford College's men's soccer team as the Fords fell, 1-0, to visiting Frostburg State on Sunday afternoon in the Haverford-hosted Jimmy Mills Classic at Walton Field.
The second day of the Classic pitted the two teams that notched wins during Saturday's opening day. Sunday's victory kept the Bobcats (5-0) undefeated while the Fords' record evened at 2-2 for the season.
The only goal of the game came in the 19th minute when Frostburg's Shawn Baker converted a penalty kick after a Haverford foul just inside the right edge of the penalty box.
Most of the team statistic totals exemplified how evenly the game played through the first half and much of the second. Both teams finished with 13 shots and Haverford owned a narrow 6-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Even the team foul totals were one whistle apart. Late in the game, though, momentum shifted Haverford's way.
The Bobcats put a shot on Fords goalie Andriy Mshanetskyy in the 71st minute but the Haverford netminder picked up his fourth of five saves for the day on the attempt. From that point forward, the Fords were able to establish almost continuous pressure in their offensive end.
Colin Lubelczyk registered back-to-back shots for Haverford coming in the 73rd and 74th minutes, both of which were saved by Frostburg goalie Abiye Jack. In the 77th minute, Nikko Giannasca and Matt Gorski took shots seconds apart but Jack came up with saves each time. Giannasca got another shot off in the 79th minute but it sailed just above the top, right corner of the frame.
A scramble in front of the Bobcats' net in the 86th resulted in a Sam Yarosh shot from six yards out but Jack, who finished with seven saves, rescued his team stopping Yarosh from netting the late equalizer.
Haverford will try to get back on the winning track during a visit to Scranton, Pa., on Sept. 12 when it will square off against host Marywood University.
