Men's soccer holds off Rowan, 2-1

GLASSBORO, N.J. - Freshman Tejan Walcott scored the eventual game-winner in the 43rd minute as the Haverford College men's soccer team defeated host Rowan University, 2-1, in non-conference action Wednesday night.

The Fords (8-3) entered the contest looking for their second consecutive win over the Profs (6-7) after beating Rowan for the first time in program history last season.

The Seitz brothers helped Haverford get off to a fast start as they connected on the game's opening goal in the 16th minute of play. Colin Seitz sent a cross into the box and his twin brother Brady Seitz fired a shot past Profs senior goalie Ryan Gill (6-6).

Walcott added to the Fords' advantage just two and a half minutes before intermission. Tallying his second career goal, Walcott deposited a loose ball in the net during a battle in the box.

Haverford would maintain the two-goal cushion until the 60th minute of the game when junior Nick Bolton brought his squad within one. Bolton took a pass in the box from Parker Oris and sent the ball inside the far post.

Looking to break its four-game losing streak, Rowan registered four of the final six shots of the contest but the Fords' defense and freshman Sam Miller prevented the equalizer.

Miller (1-0) finished with two saves to earn his first career victory in his first career start.

Gill made one stop before giving way to junior Kevin Vasta in the second half who made two saves over the final 45 minutes.

Both squads tallied eight shots on the night while Haverford earned two more corner opportunities (4-2).

The Fords are now 6-1 on the season in non-conference action but their attention turns back to the race for a Centennial Conference playoff spot as they host Muhlenberg College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Haverford and the Mules each enter the game with a mark of 2-2 in conference play.
