HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day in style with a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon at Walton Field. The win secured a spot in this year's Centennial Conference tournament for the defending conference champions.
Registering their second win over a ranked opponent in the last week, the Fords (11-4-1, 5-2-1 CC) accounted for Swarthmore's first conference loss of the season while punching their third straight ticket to the Centennial playoffs.
The rematch of last year's Centennial final saw Haverford move out to a 2-0 lead in the 92nd meeting all-time between the two rivals. Freshman Tejan Walcott opened the scoring when he delivered his second goal in the last three games, and fourth of the year, in the 29th minute. Walcott headed the ball past Swarthmore goalie Peter Maxted (9-2-4) off a cross from Brady Seitz.
Senior Ford Bohrmann scored the eventual game-winner three minutes later when he tallied his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Freshman Emery Trott headed senior David Robinson's free kick over to Bohrmann who headed it home. Bohrmann, owner of both of Haverford's game-winning goals in last year's Centennial tournament, continued his penchant for scoring big goals as he now has nine game-winners among his 13 career goals.
Garnet senior Joe Keedy scored his third of the season in the 62nd minute of the game to bring the visitors to within one but they would get no closer as the Fords' defense limited Swarthmore (9-3-4, 5-1-2) to just one shot on goal over the remainder of the contest.
Haverford freshman goalie Sam Miller made two saves to improve to 4-1-1 in six career starts.
Seniors Geoffrey Henderson, Matt Johnson, Nick Kahn, Colin Lubelczyk, Adam Morollo, Jamie Reingruber, Bohrmann and Robinson were recognized before the game for their contributions to the program's recent resurgence.
The game also featured a halftime ceremony that honored several former Haverford greats for their inclusion to the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Century Team for men's soccer. Haverford was a member of the MAC until joining the Centennial in 1993. The honorees included Dave Felsen '66, Dan Hogenauer '64, Stan Jarocki '69, Howard Morris '86, Tim O'Neill '80, Brian Shuman '78, Dan Smiley '64, James Taylor '71, Matt Zipin '78 and Phil Zipin '78.
Men's soccer capped off a standout day for Haverford as volleyball, women's soccer and field hockey also registered wins over Swarthmore which enabled the Fords to move out to a 4-0 lead in this year's competition for the Hood Trophy.
Haverford, still in the mix for the top seed in the conference tournament, closes out the Centennial regular season with a game at Johns Hopkins University on Nov. 2 at 5:30 p.m. The Blue Jays (7-7-2, 4-3-1) are currently in a three-way tie for third in the conference standings.
