Men's Soccer Overcomes Gettysburg, 2-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's soccer team used a pair of second half goals to overcome Gettysburg on Saturday, 2-0. The contest was scoreless until the 74th minute when Ben Field was put in a 1v1 situation with the goalie after outrunning the defense following a pass from Brady Seitz. Seitz added the insurance goal just under seven minutes later.

The contest started out fairly evenly as the Fords (6-3, 3-1 CC) held just a slight 4-3 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes against the visiting Bullets (7-3-1, 1-2-1 CC). However, over the final 45 minutes of play, the Fords began to find their grove offensively and outshot Gettysburg 10-2 in the second half. That increased pressure from Haverford also resulted in eight corner kicks for the game from the Fords, compared to just one corner try from Gettysburg.

The Fords survived a strong Gettysburg chance in the 62nd minute of play when Henry Smith broke behind the Fords' defense, but Sam Miller came off his line to keep the clean sheet alive. Just over 10 minutes after that big stop, it was the Fords' chance for a 1v1 with the keeper. After coming onto the field just one minute prior, Field was set up with a nice pass from Seitz. Field was able to outrun the defense and beat the goalie to the left side for the eventual game-winning goal. Field's goal was his second of the season.

Another play that was set up by Seitz in the midfield led to Haverford's second goal. This time, Seitz would take care of things himself. Dribbling down the field, he eventually was able to create enough space to unleash his shot from the top of the 18 and beat the goalie. Seitz's unassisted tally was his third goal this season and gave Haverford a 2-0 lead with less than 10 minutes to play.

That lead would be held by the Haverford defense. Anchored by Miller's 89 scoreless minutes in goal, Chris Gibson came on to play the final minute as the two combined for the team shutout. Offensively, Sam Yarosh led Haverford with a match-high five shots on the afternoon. Three other players each took two shots, while Seitz and Field scored on their only shot attempts on the afternoon.

With Saturday's win, men's soccer jumps up to third place in the Centennial Conference standings. The Fords will not resume conference play until next Saturday when they travel to first-place Dickinson. Before that match takes place, Haverford will have non-conference games at Rutgers-Camden on Monday beginning at 7 p.m. The Fords will also host Rowan on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the upcoming week.
