Men's Soccer Topped by Rutgers-Camden, 1-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's soccer team was denied in a 1-0 battle against Rutgers-Camden on Walton Field Wednesday evening. The No. 5 Fords (7-2-2) outshot the visiting Raptors (6-2-3) by a 16-4 margin but just could not find the back of the net in the tough defeat.

Rutgers-Camden scored its lone goal of the game when Antonio Romero got on the end of a long throw into the box from Eric Hurff. Romero put a head on the throw and redirected that pass just into the back of the net as the Fords looked as they might have cleared the ball off the line only to see the referee signal that the ball had in fact crossed over the goal line.

Defensively, Raptors goalie James Brett made that lone tally stand up as he made seven saves and was part of a defense that successfully defended seven corner kick attempts. Five of those seven saves came in the second half with the final two saves of the afternoon coming in the last 10 minutes of regulation.

The Fords were doubling up the Raptors by a 4-2 margin in shots following the first goal of the game. That margin only grew as Haverford pressed for the equalizer. Over the final 45 minutes of play, Haverford amassed a 12-2 edge in shots with a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The Fords placed constant pressure of the Raptor defense with shots from Ben Field and Nick Jannelli accounting for Brett's final two saves of the afternoon. Field also had the final shot of the game as he put a ball over the crossbar following a corner kick with just over one minute remaining in regulation. Field and Jannelli each finished with more shots than the entire Raptors team as they took five runs at goal each. Jannelli had three shots at goal, while Field put two of his attempts on target.

Men's soccer will head out on the road for four straight matches. Up first will be a 6 p.m. game this Saturday as the Fords travel to Dickinson in a rematch of last year's Centennial Conference Championship game.
