Men's Soccer Denied by Johns Hopkins, 2-0

BALTIMORE – The Haverford College men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to open the Centennial Conference season on Saturday. The Fords' loss was their first of the season after starting 4-0-1 and climbing to No. 8 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll. Johns Hopkins (6-0, 1-0 CC) remained unbeaten with the win on its home field.

The Blue Jays scored both of their goals during the opening half of play. Achim Younker started the scoring in the 25th minute of play with his eighth goal of the season following an assist from Alejandro Maclean. During the 38th minute of play, Johns Hopkins made the most of a direct kick just outside of the 18 as Gerritt Church recorded his second goal of the season.

Johns Hopkins finished the night with an 11-7 in shots while the Fords held a 3-2 advantage in corner kick attempts. Brian See made two saves on the night to shut out the Fords. Jeremy Astesano made three saves in net for Haverford.

Ben Field and Michael Carr were the only two players with multiple shots in the match for Haverford. Carr put his shot on goal during the eighth minute of play in what was the first offensive attack for either side. Ryan Sholes recorded Haverford's other shot on goal during the 43rd minute of play.

Men's soccer will back on the road for its next game. On Wednesday, Haverford will take on Scranton in a non-conference clash that gets underway at 7:30 p.m. Haverford will return to Walton Field on Saturday for a 2 p.m. showdown with Franklin & Marshall as the team resumes conference action.
