WESTMINSTER Md.. – The Haverford College men's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals to defeat McDaniel on the road Saturday afternoon. The Fords (5-4, 3-1 CC) got goals from Sykes Cargile and Nick John to defeat the host Green Terror (5-4-2, 1-3-1 CC) and stay within striking distance of first place in the conference.

In a possession-oriented match, both sides managed just one shot during the opening half. Michael Iacono was called on to make his only save of the half during the 20th minute of play while Nick Jannelli sent a shot wide of frame in Haverford's lone offensive chance of the half.

After the break, Haverford came out of the half with a renewed energy and instantly put the McDaniel defense under heavy pressure. Just four minutes into the second half, the Fords put two shots on goal and had another knocked down by the Green Terror defense. Nevertheless, Aaron Bilbie was there for McDaniel to come away with a pair of saves early in the second.

Haverford's persistence was rewarded during the 62nd minute of play when Sykes Cargile got on the end of pass from Nick Jannelli to put his side up 1-0. That goal was Cargile's second this season as he also scored on the road at Rowan. Today's goal was his first career game-winning effort. Jannelli was credited with his team-leading third assist of the year and has a team-high 13 points through the Fords' first nine matches.

Defense got into the offensive mix during the Fords' second goal. Nick John finished that 80th minute goal to put Haverford up 2-0 with just 10:53 remaining in regulation. Ryan Sholes was credited with the assist on that goal for his second helper of the season. He also had an assist during Haverford's win at Cabrini to start the season.

That 2-0 advantage was more than enough for Iacono and the rest of the Haverford defense as the Green Terror put just one shot on goal during each half. Iacono was credited with his second straight shutout victory and third overall this season. Offensively, the Fords finished with a 6-4 advantage in shots as six different players took a shot on the afternoon.

Men's soccer will return home this coming week for a pair of home matches on Walton Field. The Fords will host Drew this Wednesday in a 4 p.m. start. Washington College will make the trip to campus next Saturday in a scheduled 2 p.m. start to resume Centennial Conference action.
