Horwitz earns win in season opener for men's squash

NEW YORK – Haverford College's men's squash team opened its 2013-14 season Saturday afternoon at New York University, picking up a win from freshman Aaron Horwitz but falling, 8-1, to the host Violets.

The Fords' newcomer picked up his win at the No. 4 slot in the lineup, downing NYU's Andrew Fu by a score of 3-1. Horwitz swept to a 2-0 lead before Fu was able to fight back in the third game to halve his deficit. Horwitz, though, rolled to an 11-5 game-four victory to close out the win.

Bret Marlowe at No. 6 and Matt Rohn at No. 7 also contended for wins but dropped 3-2 decisions.

Marlowe broke on top of NYU's Andre Li with an 11-8 game-one win but Li answered with consecutive wins to take the lead. Marlowe battled back to knot the score at 2-2 with another 11-8 win in the fourth before Li finished it off with a game-five win.

Rohn and the Violets' Jay Prasad alternated wins in their match after Prasad opened with a win in game one. The home court player finally fought off Rohn in the fifth game, 11-6, to clinch another NYU match.

Haverford opens its home slate with its next match-ups, welcoming Lehigh University and Vassar College to the Fords' courts Saturday, Nov. 16.
