Men's squash downs Vassar for 2nd time

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Haverford College's men's squash team rolled to a 9-0 victory over host Vassar College on Saturday, but the No. 43 Fords ended the day with a split after dropping a 6-3 decision to No. 34 Northeastern University at Vassar's Kenyon Hall courts.

Haverford (2-9) downed 53rd-ranked Vassar (2-8) for the second time this season after earning an early-season home victory over the Brewers by the same score. Northeastern (8-7) was able to push past the Fords for the second time in a week after capturing a win by the identical score last weekend at the Pioneer Valley Invitational.

The Fords nearly registered an unblemished scorebook in the win over Vassar, taking eight of the nine matches by 3-0 scores.

Zach Kaden steamed to the quickest victory of the match, taking down the Brewers' Michael Iselin at No. 9 by scores of 11-2, 11-2 and 11-1. Matt Rohn, at No. 5, was nearly as quick, with wins of 11-2, 11-2 and 11-4 over Vassar's Alan Darer.

Aaron Horwitz faced the biggest battle of the day. He picked up an 11-4 win in the first game of his match at No. 1 against Ricardo Espinosa, then battled into extra points with a 14-12 win in the second. Espinosa stole the third (11-9) but Horwitz capped off the victory with an 11-6 win in the fourth game.

Johns Cummings at No. 7, Bret Marlowe at No. 8 and Kaden again at No. 9 were the team's double-winners on the day. Cummings took a 3-0 decision against Northeastern's Louie Sitwell in Saturday's second match while Marlowe was downing Nich Lailler, 3-0. Kaden raced to a 2-0 lead over Joakim Karlsson before seeing his lead halved in the third game. Kaden bounced back with an 11-4 win in the fourth to nab the team point for Haverford.

Next up for the Fords is a short trip into Philadelphia where they will square off against No. 15 Drexel University on Thursday at 6 p.m.
