Men's squash rolls to Saturday sweep at home

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The final weekend of the regular season for Haverford College's men's squash team came to a close with a pair of wins Saturday on the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center Squash Courts. The 41st-ranked Fords downed No. 40 New York University, 6-3, in the early match of the day then finished off No. 47 Swarthmore College, 9-0, in the afternoon.

Haverford improves to 4-12 with the victories while Swarthmore, which lost to NYU (3-3) in the day's middle match, falls to 6-7.

The bottom half of the nine-man order helped push the Fords to victory in the win over NYU.

Arman Terzian at No. 6 earned the first point of the day with a 3-0 win over Arvind Ramgopal. After Laurenson Ward battled to a 3-2 win over NYU's Aditya Kochhar at No. 3 for Haverford's second point, Zach Kaden closed out a tight 3-0 win (11-8, 11-9, 12-10) at No. 9 to provide the Fords with a 3-0 advantage through the first three completed contests.

The visiting Violets picked up a point at No. 2 but John Cummings, one of four seniors celebrating Senior Day, rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 at No. 5 for the Fords' penultimate match point.

The clincher came at the No. 8 spot from Jonathan Nguyen who rolled to a quick 2-0 lead over Will Mixter before settling for a 3-1 win to give Haverford the match.

Senior Bret Marlowe picked up the sixth point for Haverford with a win at No. 7.

The day's final match saw Haverford storm to its 9-0 win by surrendering a total of two games to Swarthmore players during the Fords' triumph.

Along with the winners of matches against NYU, Haverford also picked up wins against the Garnet from Nathan Vestrich-Shade at No. 1, Aaron Horwitz at No. 2 and Matt Rohn at No. 4.

Prior to the NYU match the four seniors -- Cummings, Marlow, Rohn and Terzian -- were honored with a brief ceremony to celebrate their years with the program.

Next up for the Fords is the 2014 College Squash Association Team Championship on Feb. 14-16 hosted by Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
