Men's Squash Splits at the Blair Academy

BLAIRSTOWN, N.J. – The Haverford College men's squash team went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon, falling to NYU 8-1, but rebounding with a 5-4 win over the Fordham Rams at the Blair Academy.

With their win today, the Fords improve to 4-2 on the season and are just one win away from tying last year's mark.

Despite the 8-1 score, three ladder positions went to a deciding fifth game vs. NYU. Junior captain Laurenson Ward rallied to send his match to a fifth game, but lost 11-6. Junior Will Greer lost the fourth and fifth games in a tight battle with Andre Li (5-11, 11-4, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6). Freshman Zach Cole couldn't hold the momentum after a thrilling 22-20 victory in game three, losing the last two games in his match. Freshman Peter Dudley won the only point for the Fords as he took down Aditya Kochhar in four.

Sophomore Aaron Horwitz had three straight two-point games, losing two of them in a four game setback. Freshman Shilin Jog dropped two consecutive 11-7 contests before suffering a 12-10 loss in game three.

Dudley also scored a win against Fordham which clinched the match for the Fords after allowing just five points in the final two games. Cole also picked up a victory, winning the last two games after dropping game two. Sophomore Chris Hoogstraten won games one, two and four, evening his record to 3-3 on the season. The Rams did not have players for the last two ladder positions which resulted in default wins for the Fords.

Head coach Niki Clement was happy with the bounce back win over Fordham, "We got strong performances from Zach (Cole), Chris (Hoogstraten) and Laurenson (Ward)," said the fifth-year head coach. "Peter Dudley kept his composure and clinched an important match for us."

Haverford will have one more match before the holiday break against Penn State at the GIAC Squash Courts on Dec. 6. The match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
