Men's Squash Wins Home Opener Over Swarthmore, 8-1

HAVERFORD, Pa.  – The Haverford College men's squash team made its 2016-17 home debut on Saturday, taking an 8-1 victory over the Swarthmore College Garnet at the GIAC Squash Courts. Haverford improves to 4-1 on the season with the win over its Tri-Co rival. 

Scoring the first individual win for the Fords, freshman Keshav Kalani made his debut in the top nine of the ladder with a victory in the nine spot over Angus Lam (11-4, 11-3, 11-0). Sophomore Ryan Dukarm then got past Matt Peterson at the No. 6 position (11-2, 11-7, 11-3) and junior Yash Singh took down Theodore Park (11-5, 11-5,11-6) in the third position.

In the next round of matches, freshman Cyrus Bahadori posted a win at the sixth spot over Charlotte Iwasaki (11-2, 11-2, 11-2) before sophomore Alex Liu downed Nathaniel Sandalow-Ash in the fifth spot (11-3, 11-4, 11-7), clinching the win for the Fords.

Freshman Tate Miller took a win in the second spot on the ladder, dispatching Davy Qi in straight sets (11-1, 11-3, 11-1). The third set of matches saw junior Shilin Jog best Olivia Cheng in the seventh spot (11-1, 11-6, 11-3) ahead of senior Aaron Horwitz, who beat Dong Shin You in the fourth spot on the ladder (11-4, 11-2, 11-4).

Junior Peter Dudley was bested by Henry Ortmeyer at the number one spot in a spirited match that took four games to complete. Dudley was defeated 6-11, 7-11, 11-7, 12-10 to give Swarthmore its lone individual win on the afternoon.

In an exhibition match, Benjamin Soloway handled Amanda Izes in straight sets 11-7, 11-3, 11-3. Haverford improves to 10-0 all-time against Swarthmore.

The Fords will take a 4-1 record into the holiday break as the 2016 portion of the schedule has now concluded. Haverford will be back in action on January 13 at Wesleyan, taking on the host Cardinals (1:00 p.m.) before facing Tufts in a neutral site contest (3:00 p.m.)
