Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Release

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College men's squash senior co-captain Aaron Horwitz has been named a 2016-17 Philadelphia Inquirer Men's At-Large Academic All-Area selection, the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA), announced on Wednesday.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 30 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area that compose Philly-SIDA.

In addition to the All-Area recognition, Horwitz was earlier named one a Ambler Scholar-Athlete and a College Squash Association (CSA) Scholar Athlete as an International Studies major. The academic All-Area designation is the first for a Haverford men's squash athlete since 2011-12 when Alex Spiliotes took home the honor. 

In March, Horwitz was named the Player of the Chaffee Cup division by the College Squash Association (CSA), as the organization honored a player from each division contested at February's Men's CSA National Championships in Cambridge, Mass.

Horwitz competed as the sole senior in the Haverford lineup as the squad eclipsed its program best single season win total this year. Horwitz went 3-0 individually at the team championships to help Haverford claim the cup with triumphs over Washington, Boston College and Bucknell.

In the final against Bucknell, Horwitz faced an opponent at the #3 position, earning a four-game victory (10-12, 11-4, 11-3, and 11-3). Haverford defeated Bucknell, 5-4 to capture the Chaffee Cup championship.

Horwitz leaves the program with 36 individual wins, the fourth most in program history.
