NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 30 Haverford College men's squash team (12-3) fell to No. 27 Hobart (8-11) by an 8-1 final in a Conroy Cup quarterfinal matchup on Friday evening at Yale's Brady Squash Center. The match concluded the first day of action at the College Squash Association (CSA) Men's Team Championships.
The Fords picked up their individual match win from senior co-captain Alex Liu at the sixth flight. Liu outlasted a challenge from the Statesmen's Quran Davis. Liu took the first game by a 11-9 final, but Davis reversed that scoreline in an 11-9 victory of his own in the second. Liu then powered past his opponent with consecutive wins, taking a 12-10 victory before an 11-8 triumph to put an early tally in Haverford's ledger. Liu now has 36 career wins, and is tied for eighth in program history with Aaron Horwitz '17.
The Fords put up battles up and down the ladder, highlighted by Alden Weinberg taking Cristian Escalona to a fifth game at the eighth flight. Weinberg climbed out of a 2-0 hole to record consecutive 11-5 victories. In the decisive fifth game, Escalona responded with an 11-7 win.
At the third flight, Tate Miller was locked in a close contest with Quinn Udy. Udy took the first game 11-7, but Miller responded, needing extra points for a 13-11 triumph to knot things at a game each. Udy then earned an 11-3 victory in the third game, but Miller proved his mettle taking his opponent deep into extra points before falling 16-14 in the fourth.
Ryan Dukarm and Aaron Witkin also grabbed individual game wins at the seventh and ninth flights, respectively.
Haverford returns to action tomorrow at 6 p.m., as the Fords face off with No. 31 Bucknell in a Conroy Cup consolation semifinal at the Brady Center. Earlier this month, the Fords defeated Bucknell by a 6-3 final at home inside the GIAC Squash Courts. Haverford is 3-4 all-time against the Bison, but has won three in a row in the series.
