Acaba heading into rd. of 16 at Southeast Regional

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Luis Acaba of the Haverford College men's tennis team won twice Saturday on day one of the U.S. Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association 2013 Fall Southeast Regional, advancing into Sunday's round of 16 within the Championship singles draw.

Acaba rolled to an opening round win in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) over Evan Stutchin of Ursinus College during morning action. Acaba then downed Yuvrai Kumar of Carnegie Mellon University (6-4, 6-1) in the afternoon to move into Sunday's round of 16 where he'll take on Tanner Brown of Johns Hopkins University at 9:30 a.m.

Zack Mason registered a win in his opening singles match Saturday morning but his stay in the Championship draw ended in the round of 32 with a loss to Erik Lim of Johns Hopkins.

Both Jacob Youse and Matt Romei were defeated in their round of 64 matches of the Championship draw relegating the Haverford pair to the consolation bracket. Youse exited the tournament with a loss in the consolation round of 32, but Romei advanced into the bracket's round of 16 with a win over Preston Pool of Swarthmore College. Romei will play Stratton Gilmore of host school University of Mary Washington on Sunday at noon.

In other singles action Saturday, Andy Dougherty captured a victory in his opening match of the B1 singles draw but fell in the quarterfinals while Robert Homan mirrored those results in the B2 draw.

Homan and Mason teamed up in the Championship doubles draw, as did Dougherty and Romei, Saturday morning.

Both Fords pairings were defeated in the round of 64 moving the duos into the consolation bracket. Homan and Mason square off Sunday against Kaleb Nguyen and Gilmore from Mary Washington, and Dougherty and Romei will battle Clark Chapman and Joey Frank of Dickinson College.
