Men's tennis rolls to win over hosts in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Haverford College's men's tennis team won for the second time during the squad's spring trip, taking a 9-0 decision from host University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras on Wednesday afternoon.

Haverford (2-1) downed Wabash College earlier in the week for the Fords' first win of the 2014 season.

Wednesday's match saw Haverford reel off three quick victories in doubles action as the Fords' three pairings dropped a total of only five games in creating a 3-0 advantage.

Zack Mason slid up to the No. 1 singles spot for Haverford and battled Puerto Rico's Diego Orro into a third-set super-tiebreak. Mason pounded out a 6-2 win in the opening set but Orro stormed back with a commanding 6-0 win to even the match. The tiebreak set was similar to the previous sets as one player dominated the other with Mason taking the set and match victory by a count of 10-1.

Both Matt Romei and Andy Dougherty made quick work of their Rio Piedras opponents at 2- and 3-singles, respectively. Romei overpowered Gabriel Martinez by scores of 6-1, 6-1, and Dougherty blasted John Donnato by the same scores.

The match victory closes out the Fords' competition slate in Puerto Rico. Haverford returns to action on March 22 with a visit to Gettysburg College for the Centennial Conference opener for the two teams.
