Fords sweep past Gettysburg in league opener

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Saturday's Centennial Conference opener for visiting Haverford College was a sweet one as the Fords easily downed host Gettysburg College, 9-0, behind a strong outing that included a set loss only once in the sunny but windy conditions.

Haverford (3-1, 1-0 CC) broke out quickly over the Bullets (5-1, 0-1) by capturing all three doubles matches by identical 8-4 scores.

Andy Dougherty, a winner at No. 2 doubles with Devin Van Dyke, earned his second point of the day for the Fords with a straight set (6-2, 6-0) win at 3-singles over Gettysburg's Mike Pratt.

Robert Homan and Harrison Elbert also won two points each on the day.

Homan won (6-3, 6-0) at No. 4 singles after teaming with Elbert for the win at 3-doubles. Elbert earned his second point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the Bullets' Wesley Craft at No. 6 singles.

The Fords have a quick turnaround for their next match as they take on Kenyon College Sunday morning in Swarthmore, Pa., in a neutral-site non-conference battle.
