HAVERFORD, Pa. – A pair of doubles wins and an early pair of wins in singles staked Haverford College's men's tennis team to a lead over visiting Christopher Newport University Friday night, but the Captains were able to rally late and steal a 5-4 non-conference win over the host Fords at The Gary Lutnick Tennis & Track Center in Alumni Field House.

Haverford (4-3) was behind 1-0 to CNU (9-4) before doubles wins at Nos. 1 and 3.

Luis Acaba and Sloan Millman battled to a 9-7 win at 1-doubles to even the score, then Andy Dougherty and Devin Van Dyke teamed up at No. 3 for an 8-6 win to push Haverford into the lead.

The advantage stretched to 3-1 with Acaba's straight-set win at 1-singles (6-2, 6-2) but the Captains picked up a point at No. 3 to halve their deficit.

Zack Mason fought CNU's Steven Boslet point-for-point in their first set at 2-singles with Mason prevailing 7-4 (4). He rolled to a 6-1 win in the second to capture another point for the Fords.

Christopher Newport began its rally with a win at No. 4 then pulled the match even, at 4-4, with a straight set win at No. 6.

That left the match decision up to Dougherty and CNU's Arttu Fiva, a match-up that went Haverford's way when the two were paired with team partners at 3-doubles.

Fiva rolled out to a lead with a 6-2 win in the first set then led 5-3 in the second before Dougherty would hold serve -- fighting off two match points -- to force another game.

Three quick points by Fiva, on serve, added up to a 40-0 lead and a triple-match point. Dougherty fought off the first one, then the second one and finally the third one to bring the score to deuce. Fiva would win the next two points, however, to clinch the win for himself and his team.

With little rest the Fords will head back into action Saturday afternoon when they will entertain McDaniel College in a Centennial Conference match that begins at noon.
