Strong singles play lifts Fords over Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Haverford College sunk the Washington College Shoremen in Centennial Conference men's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon, 7-2, at the Schottland Tennis Center.

The Fords (6-3, 3-0 CC) remain undefeated in conference play thanks in large part to outstanding individual play in singles action. Haverford captured five of the six singles matches with Luis Acaba swinging his way to his sixth win of the season. Acaba wasted no time dispatching of Washington's top player, Vishnu Rajes at No. 1 singles. The sophomore won 6-0, 6-2 and was the first to complete his singles match.

John Cummings followed Acaba's win with a timely victory of his own. Cummings easily won his match at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-3 against Washington's Corey Pippin.

Matt Romei (6-3, 6-1) and Robert Homan (6-2, 6-3) also added a point to Haverford's team score, winning at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Andy Dougherty needed an extra game in the second set to dispatch his foe at No. 5 singles. Dougherty prevailed 7-5 in the second set after winning the first set, 6-2.

The only match that the Fords did not win in singles action was a thriller at No. 2. Washington's (4-5, 1-2) Marc Cywinski narrowly edged out Zack Mason, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Haverford started the day by winning the first two doubles matches with ease. Dougherty and Devin Van Dyke blanked Washington at No. 3 doubles, 8-0, while Harrison Elbert and Romei bested the Shoreman's second-ranked doubles pair, 8-2. Acaba and Sloan Millman fell 8-6 in top-flight doubles play.

The Fords continue their spring schedule this Saturday at home against conference opponent Dickinson College. Start time is set for 12 p.m.
