Fords rally to down Diplomats

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Haverford College men's tennis team trailed 2-1 after doubles action, but the Fords rallied to defeat host Franklin & Marshall College, 5-4, by winning four of the six singles matches in Saturday's Centennial Conference match.

Haverford (10-4, 6-1 CC) was led by senior Andy Dougherty who captured a doubles and singles victory against F&M (8-6, 4-3) on the day. Dougherty teamed up with Devin Van Dyke to win No. 3 doubles by an 8-6 score. Dougherty later won his No. 5 singles match by downing the Diplomats' Kazuhiro Tomioka 7-6 (8-6), 6-0.

Fellow senior Matt Romei rebounded after falling 8-5 at second doubles with Sloan Millman, to claim victory in his individual match at No. 3 singles. The captain won his singles match in three sets over Nolan Bacchieri, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Jacob Youse and Robert Homan won their singles matches in straight sets at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Youse won, 6-4, 6-2, and Homan came out on top in the final singles position, 6-4, 6-0.

At No. 1 and No. 2 singles both Luis Acaba and Zack Mason lost in second-set tiebreakers. Acaba fell, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at the top individual match and Mason could not overcome Doug Kaplan at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

The Fords return to Norman B. Bramall Tennis Courts for their final home match of the season on Tuesday, April 22, as they host the Bears of Ursinus College. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
