Fords sink Ursinus with singles sweep

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's tennis team swept all five singles matches in Tuesday's 8-1 Centennial Conference win over visiting Ursinus College at the Alumni Field House.

Due to the threat of rain, the match was moved indoors to avoid any disturbances. The Fords battled in doubles action and came out with the early 2-1 lead.

Luis Acaba and Jacob Youse needed a tiebreaker to win their No. 1 doubles contest. With the match tied 8-8, Acaba and Youse won all but two of the tiebreaker points to finish with a score of 9-8 (7-2).

The No. 3 doubles match featured Fords' Andy Dougherty and Devin Van Dyke. The tandem had little trouble against the Bears' third team as Haverford won, 8-3.

Captain Matt Romei avenged his doubles loss by claiming victory in a marathon match at third singles. Romei won the first set 7-5, but dropped the second, 6-3, to Tyler Arsenault. Romei and Arsenault traded points back and forth in the third-set tiebreaker until Romei was finally able to gain a two-point advantage and win the third-set tiebreaker, 13-11.

The top individual match saw Acaba use powerful hitting and pinpoint placement to top Ursinus' best player Evan Stutchin, 6-3, 6-1.

In the other four singles matches, the Fords did not allow a single Ursinus player to score more than two games in a set.

Today's win sets up a Saturday showdown with rival Swarthmore College for sole possession of second place in the conference. The Fords and the Garnet will square off at Swarthmore on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m.
