Fords finish season in conference semifinals

Fords finish season in conference semifinals

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College men's tennis team battled rival Swarthmore College in the Centennial Conference semifinals on Saturday, but the host Garnet topped the Fords, 5-0.

Haverford concludes its season with an 11-6 record and has advanced to the conference semifinals in four of the last five years. Swarthmore moves on to the league title match on Sunday and will face the winner of the Johns Hopkins University and Franklin & Marshall College semifinal.

The Fords fought through all three doubles matches, but were unable to come away with any team points after doubles play. Andy Dougherty and Devin Van Dyke nearly avenged their loss at No. 3 doubles from a week ago, but Swarthmore's third doubles team stymied Haverford's rally and won 8-6.

Sloan Millman and Matt Romei teamed up at No. 2 doubles and hit multiple winners early in the match. Anthony Collard and Thomas Vernier pulled away late, though, to take down Romei and Millman by an 8-4 score.

The top doubles match saw Luis Acaba and Jacob Youse fall, 8-3.

Swarthmore captured victories at No. 2 and No. 6 singles to put the match out of reach and end the semifinal with the Garnet up, 5-0.

Haverford finishes the season as the No. 11 team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic/South Regional rankings.
