Nakayama Moves into Round of 16 at ITA Regional

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Freshman Dais Nakayama made his presence known during his collegiate debut at the USTA-ITA Southeast Regional. Nakayama upset No. 9 Edward Ang of Carnegie Mellon in the Round of 32 to stay alive in the Championship Singles Main Draw. His upset win was his second straight set win on the afternoon, highlighting the first day's action for the Haverford College men's tennis team.

Nakayama started off his day with a pair of 6-2 set victories in his first collegiate match against Moravian's Matt Tuorto. The Fords' freshman kept the straight set wins coming in the second round with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win against Carnegie Mellon's Edward Ang. After upsetting the No. 9 seed, Nakayama was square off with Johns Hopkins' Ben Hwang in the Round of 16 tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. Hwang is the No. 4 seed in the championship singles draws.

Jacob Youse stayed alive in the consolation bracket of the championship singles draw with a win as his opponent was forced to retire in his second match of the day. Youse dropped into the consolation rounds with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Johns Hopkins' Ermerson Walsh in the Round of 64. Luis Acaba was the Fords' final entrant in the championship singles bracket. Acaba was down a game in the third set of his Round of 64 match when he was forced to retire and withdraw from the tournament. Acaba trailed 6-5 in the third set after forcing that decisive set with a convincing 6-1 win in set two.

In the Championship Doubles draw, Nakayama and Youse fell in the Round of 64 to Washington College's Ryan Holtschneider and Vishnu Rajes. However, the two received a pair of byes in the bracket and will play in the third round consolation Sunday morning at 8 a.m.

In the B Draws, Haverford's duo of Harrison Elbert and Sloan Millman advanced to the B1 Doubles semifinals. Elbert and Millman won their quarterfinal match against Grove City's Colby Beighey and Peter Riley by an 8-6 score. In the Round of 16, the duo picked up an 8-5 win against Hampden-Sydney's David Dodson and Houston Wilson.

Ishaan Prinz and Elbert will each be back on Sunday morning in their respective B Singles Draws after each dropped three-set matches in the Round of 16. Elbert fell to Christopher Newport's Michael Dodd in three hard-fought sets. He took the opening set by tiebreak, 7-6 (3). However, Elbert dropped the second set by a 7-5 score and the 10-point tiebreak by a 10-8 score. Prinz also won his first set (6-4). However, he dropped a 7-5 second set and the 10-point tiebreak by a 10-8 decision.
