HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's tennis team fell to New York University in a battle of regionally-ranked teams during the home opener on Saturday. The Fords came into the match ranked No. 11 in the Atlantic south Region while the Violets are the No. 17 team in the Northeast Region.

Eli Phelps was a double winner for Haverford as he won both his singles match and teamed up with Raja Arul to also win in doubles. The Fords also got a win from co-captain Ishaan Prinz in singles for their third point of the afternoon.

Haverford posted the most convincing win of doubles with the pairing of Arul and Phelps coming away with the first point of the afternoon following an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles. That win came against the No. 12 doubles pairing in the Northeast Regional rankings.

The Fords nearly came away with the advantage in doubles, but the Violets were able to pull through in back-and-forth matches at the top two positions. Freshmen David Kong and Rob Kresch evenly split the first 14 games before dropping a tiebreak at No. 2 doubles. In the top doubles match, Josh Moskovitz and Dias Nakayama were edged out by an 8-6 score.

Phelps and Prinz both emerged victorious in singles with hard fought victories. Phelps prevailed in straight sets, but needed extra games in both as he won by identical 7-5 scores at the No. 4 position. Prinz, playing No. 5, needed a tiebreak to claim his opening set. After winning a 7-5 tiebreak following the split of the first 12 games, the Fords' co-captain rolled to a 6-2 second set for the victory.

Men's tennis will now travel to No. 39 TCNJ next Saturday for another matchup with a nationally-ranked opponent. That will be the Fords' final match before they track to California for a pair of matches over Spring Break.
