Men's Tennis Tripped Up by No. 39 TCNJ

EWING TOWNSHIP, N.J. – The Haverford College men's tennis team continued to challenge itself early in the spring as the Fords traveled to Ewing Township to take on The College of New Jersey on Saturday. The visiting Fords claimed one victory in doubles but were unable to replicate that success in singles during an 8-1 defeat at the hands of the No. 39 team in the latest ITA National Rankings.

Haverford's victory came when Raja Arul and Nick Sweeney teamed up at No. 3 doubles and were able to come away with an 8-6 win in that position. The pairing of Arul and Sweeney is now 2-1 on the year, including a perfect 2-0 mark at third doubles. Arul has three wins in total this spring during doubles play with a perfect 3-0 mark at No. 3. Sweeney has been paired with Arul for each of his doubles matches so far this spring.

Haverford also put up strong challenges in the other two doubles matches against the No. 13 team in the Northeast Region. However, in both cases the Fords fell by an 8-5 score. At No. 1 singles, it was Dais Nakayama and Josh Moskovitz while the Fords paired David Kong and Eli Phelps together in the middle position.

Although unable to come up with a victory in singles, the Fords again mounted several tough challenges. Moskovitz forced a second set tiebreak at No. 1 singles after splitting the first 12 games of that set. At No. 5 singles, Ishaan Prinz also forced his opponent into playing extra games before a 7-5 score went in favor of TCNJ. Haverford was tough throughout the lineup as all six singles players won at least four games during their matches.

Men's tennis will now get set to depart for California during the College's week of Spring Break. While out west, the Fords will take on Hope International (Tuesday at noon PST) and Whittier (Wednesday at 3 p.m. PST).
