Men's Tennis Starts Conference Slate with Blanking of McDaniel, 9-0

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Haverford College men's tennis team rolled past McDaniel on Saturday in the team's Centennial Conference opener. The Fords (3-6, 1-0 CC) allowed just five games total in doubles and just seven more in singles during a dominating afternoon.

Nick Sweeney and Eli Phelps assumed to the top doubles position in the matchup with the Green Terror and did not miss a beat in their first match together this year, an 8-3 victory. First years teaming up for the first time, Rob Kresch and Arnav Patodia were 8-1 winners in the middle doubles match. Eliot Faust and David Kong were also 8-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.

Those same six players all came back with wins in singles. The fourth through sixth positions were all 6-0, 6-0 blankings in Haverford's favor. The wins from Kresch and Patodia at their respective fourth and fifth positions marked the first singles victories of their collegiate careers. Faust made his singles debut for the spring season in the match during his shutout performance. He is now 3-0 for his career in the singles lineup.

Phelps found the toughest match of the afternoon in the No. 1 singles spot, but still walked away a 6-3, 6-1 winner. He now has a team-leading six wins in singles. Sweeney rolled to his second consecutive singles win as he allowed just one game during each of his two sets. Kong allowed just a single game in the second set of the No. 2 singles match to help wrap up the team sweep.

Men's tennis will close out the month of March with a home date against Muhlenberg this Tuesday, March 28. That match is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
