BALTIMORE, Md. – The Haverford College men's tennis team suffered its first conference defeat of the year during a first-place showdown at No. 21 Johns Hopkins on Saturday. Kevin Yan was able to come away with a win at No. 3 singles for the Fords (7-7, 5-1 CC), but the Blue Jays (8-2, 5-0 CC) showed off their national prowess by taking the other eight matches.

Yan improved his Centennial Conference record to 3-1 in singles this spring as he was a straight set winner on Saturday. Yan won a 10-8 tiebreak during his opening set after splitting the first 12 games with his opponent. He then clinched his match with a dominant 6-1 second set to give him six wins on the year.

Ishaan Prinz forced a decisive 10-point tiebreak in his match at No. 5 singles. The Fords' co-captain dropped a tiebreak in the opening set but came back with a 6-1 win in the second. However, he would be denied by a 10-5 score in the tiebreak. Dais Nakayama nearly won a set at No. 2 singles, but was edged out by a 6-4 final in the opening set.

The match started off with singles while doubles were played to six games. Haverford's No. 2 paring of David Kong and Raja Arul, along with the No. 3 team of Eli Phelps and Nick Sweeney, both won four games but were edged out in the final crucial points. The Blue Jays took No. 1 doubles by a 6-2 score.

Men's tennis will be back at home this week for a non-conference match against University of the Sciences that will get underway at 4 p.m. The Fords return to Centennial Conference play next Saturday in a 1 p.m. start at Dickinson. The Fords can officially clinch a playoff spot with a win against the Red Devils in that meeting.
