CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Haverford College men's tennis team played the first match of its west coast trip against No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday evening. The Stags (15-1) proved worthy of their national ranking with a 9-0 victory despite the Fords entering the match with the momentum of a victory over No. 31 Stevens in their last time out. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finished as the national runner-up during the NCAA National Championships last spring.

Each of the three doubles matches went to CMS by 8-3 scores as the Stags took the early advantage. Haverford went with the lineup of David Kong/Kevin Yan, George Jiang/Pranav Krishnan, and Patrick Kley/Rob Kresch for doubles competition.

The Fords put up their toughest battle of singles at No. 4 where Pranav Krishnan dropped a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 battle, taking the second set of that match to extra games. Matching up against the No. 4 and No. 5 players in the entire country at the top two singles matches, Kevin Yan secured four games during his opening set of No. 1 singles and two more in the second. David Kong, playing No. 2 singles, won two games against his top-five ranked opponent.

Rob Kresch battled his way to five games at No. 5 singles, while George Jiang (No. 3) and Arnav Patodia (No. 6 singles) each took one game during their respective matches.

With the competition portion of the week ramping up in the second half of the week, men's tennis will return to the courts on Thursday to battle Wheaton (Mass.). First serves in that match are slated for a 10 a.m. local start on the west coast (1 p.m. EDT).
