NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Haverford College's relay quartet of Ivo Milic-Strkalj, Gebby Keny, Michael Riccio and Jordan Schilit raced to a fourth-place finish in the distance medley relay (DMR) Friday evening in the concluding event of the opening day of the two-day NCAA Division III men's indoor track & field championship.
The Fords posted a season-best time of 10 minutes, 1.43 seconds, only 1.85 seconds behind the winning time (9:59.58) by the foursome from the University of Wisconson–La Crosse.
Haverford entered the event with the ninth-fastest seed time and finished as the only team of the ten in the event to better its entry time. By finishing within the top eight at the national meet, Milic-Strkalj, Keny, Riccio (pictured) and Schilit earn All-America status.
In the other event with a Haverford participant, Charlie Marquardt finished 13th in the preliminary heats of the men's mile. The top 10 from the two prelims advance into Saturday's championship final heat.
Saturday's list of events will begin with the Fords in 11th place in the team scoring with the five points earned by the DMR. Wis.-La Crosse sits in first place with 35 points.
Three runners from Haverford will compete for points and all-American status in th 5,000-meter run Saturday afternoon. Christopher Stadler will step to the line in the timed final event as the top seed with an entry time of 14:23.36. Joining Stadler in the event are Peter Kissin (14:28.79) --recently awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship -- and Schilit (14:29.79).
The men's 5,000, the final individual event of the championship schedule, is slated to start at 3:30 p.m. CST on Saturday.
