Men's Track & Field Thrives at Villanova Invitational

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. and CHESTER, Pa. – The Haverford College men's indoor track and field team competed at two separate events on Friday afternoon, with sprinters and middle distance runners heading to the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex on Staten Island for the Villanova Open and field athletes making a quicker jaunt to Widener's Schwartz Athletic Center for the Widener Field Meet, a two-day event focusing mainly on jumps and throws.

In the mile at the Villanova Open, Greg Morgan and Henry Woods each posted times that currently rank among the best times in Division III this season. Morgan finished in fourth place overall with a career-best 4:13.16. The time was converted to 4:16.86 for NCAA qualifying purposes, which gives Morgan the eighth best time thus far in Division III. Woods also posted a career-best 4:14.50 for a fifth place overall finish. The time was converted to 4:17.76, which is currently  good for the 11th fastest mark in Division III. Julian Schneider finished the mile in a time of 4:31.00, narrowly missing his personal best.

Haverford alumni Charlie Marquardt '16 won the men's mile as an unattached runner, finishing in 4:07.57.

In the 60m sprint, Alex Frost finished in 31st with a time of 7.53. Frost also competed in the 200m, finishing in 23.71 for a 19th place finish.  Liam Lynch joined Frost in the 200m, crossing 12th place with a time of 23:33. In the 400m, Lynch finished in 51.54 to finished third in his heat and sixth overall.

In the 800m, Peter Kurtz (1:59.04) and Chris Goings (1:59.54) each posted season best times, crossing in 7th and 8th, respectively.

At the Widener Field Meet in Chester, Greg Van Aken finished second in the pole vault, tying his career-best mark with a height of 3.8m in the lone event held on Thursday evening.

In the long jump, George Avecillas finished fourth with a 4.83m mark. Avecillas also registered a mark of 9.49m in the shot put. Zach Oji finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.02m. Josiah Legaspi finished in sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 11.49m.

Haverford returns to split action a week from Saturday, sending runners to the Colden Invitational at Ursinus as well as the Villanova Invitational back in New York City on Staten Island. Haverford is then home for two consecutive weeks, hosting the McElligott Invitational (Feb. 11) and the Keogh Invitational (Feb. 18) ahead of the Centennial Championships at Ursinus (Feb. 25-26).
