Woods Posts Strong 3000m Time At Villanova Invitational To Headline Busy Day

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. and STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Haverford men's indoor track and field team had athletes competing in two separate events on Saturday, as the teams split between the Colden Invitational, hosted by Ursinus, and the Villanova Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Indoor Track and Field Complex on Staten Island.

At the Villanova-hosted meet, Henry Woods and Greg Morgan each competed in the 3000m with Woods finishing in sixth with a time of 8:23.76, easily clearing his previous personal best of 8:28.43. For NCAA qualifying purposes, the time is converted to 8:29.61. With results still rolling in from meets across the country, Woods' time is the 13th best in Division III this season.

Morgan, fresh off Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week honors, crossed in 14th place with a time of 8:44.41 in his first official foray into the indoor distance.

In the 800m, Peter Kurtz finished in 14th with a time of 1:55.78, an indoor personal best. Converted for NCAA qualifying purposes, the time is 1:57.44 and currently ranks at the 46th best mark at the Division III level this season. Chris Goings finished in 22nd with an indoor personal best time of 1:57.96.

In the men's mile, Julian Schneider eclipsed his personal best, setting a new collegiate mark with a 4:26.04 finish, good for 14th overall.

Liam Lynch posted a ninth place finish in the 400m (51.03) and a 26th place finish in the 200m (23.09), facing mainly Division I competition.

Closer to home, a larger contingent competed at the Colden Invitational in Collegeville. 

The 3000m included a bevy of personal bests falling as Haverford distance runners were led by Dylan Gearinger, who finished second. Gearinger posted a career-best time of 8:36.10 to pace the Fords. The mark is the 27th best time in Division III this season. Following in third, Graham Peet posted a career-best 8:41.25, the 50th best time in NCAA this season.  Jimmy Gorman was fourth overall in a career-best 8:42.38.

Charlie Hale finished fifth in a career-best 8:44.36. Ryan Herlihy was seventh in a career-best 8:54 while James Stadler was just behind him in eighth overall (career-best 8:45.07). Sam McCalpin followed up an outstanding performance at the Collegeville Invitational by smashing his previous career-best by 12 seconds (8:59.82). Evan Hamilton was 13th with a career-best 9:03.7. David Watt rounded out the Haverford contingent with a career-best 9:27.93.

Alex Frost finished in 22nd place with a 7.49 in the 60m. In the 200m, Frost crossed in 24.12, good for 18th place. Scott Pollara also competed in the 200m, sprinting to a 24th place finish with a career-best 24.55, taking first in his heat.

In the 400m, Pollara crossed in 20th place (55.09) while Zach Oji was not far behind in 22nd (55.55). The 800m saw Ian Woodhouse finish in 15th (2:05.45) while Chris Gandolfo-Lucia made his debut in the distance with an 18th place finish (2:07.23). Matt Willig was 20th in 2:07.40.

A busy mile included Simon Perales finishing in fourth place (career-best 4:31:59), while Lincoln Satterthwaite followed in sixth (4:33.89). Willig finished 10th overall (4:38.61), Arthur Chang crossed in 21st (career-best 4:56.34) and Joshua Frye finished in 27th (5:02.10). The Haverford contingent was rounded out by Steve Gan in 30th (career-best 5:04.43) and Liam Bassett in 31st (5:07.16).

In a limited slate of field events, Jack Brower set a new career-best in the high jump with a mark of 1.73m.

Haverford returns to action with a home meet on Saturday, February 11 as the McElligott Invitational comes to the Alumni Field House. The action is expected to start at 11:00 a.m.
