Men's Indoor Track and Field Takes Two Event Titles, Posts Top Marks at McElligott Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa.  – The Haverford men's indoor track and field team competed at the Seamus McElligott Invitational at the Alumni Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Fords took home the event title in the 4x200m relay and the shot put and had strong times and marks all afternoon, with Henry Woods, Jimmy Gorman, Graham Peet and Charlie Hale posting NCAA  Division III top 50 times.

The Fords 4x200m relay team of Liam Lynch, Alex Frost, Zach Oji and Scott Pollara crossed in 1:35.13 to outpace Swarthmore while in the 400m relay, the same squad finished in 3:29.28, narrowly missing a title as Widener came away with the crown. The other Haverford 4x200m squad of Hiroshi Kawakatsu, Ian Woodhouse, Chris Goings and Peter Kurtz finished in sixth with a time of 3:39.46.

Josiah Legaspi captured the shot put title with a distance of 12.04m and George Avecillas finished third with a mark of 10.28m.

In the men's mile Woods finished third in 4:16.80, a time that eclipses his 4.17.76 mark at the Villanova Open and places him within the Top 25 times in NCAA Division III this season. Greg Morgan was ninth in 4:27.67.  Kurtz finished in 11th with a time of 4:28.88 while Julian Schneider (4:32.76) and Lincoln Satterthwaite (4:33.52) finished in 13th and 14th, respectively. Satterthwaite and Willig won their respective heats in the process. 

Sam McCalpin (4:35.27), Goings (4:38.20) and Matt Willig (4:38.82) finished 18-20 while Marcelo Jauregui-Volpe (4:40.62), David Watt (career-best 4:45.72) and Chris Gandolfo-Lucia (4:45.99) rounded out the Fords contingent in 25th, 28th and 30th, respectively.

Gorman finished second in the 5000m in an indoor-best 15:04.43. Peet was third in an indoor-best 15:05.21, Hale was fourth in an indoor best 15:10.74. All three times are within the top 50 times in NCAA Division three this season.

Ryan Herlihy (15:29.44) and James Stadler (indoor-best 15:44.96) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Evan Hamilton (16:35.49) and Liam Bassett (career-best 17:17.77) rounded out the Haverford finishers.

Oji finished third in the 60m hurdles (10.42) while Frost was eighth in the 60m (7.41). In the 200m, Lynch finished third overall in 23.43.  In the 400m, Kawakatsu crossed in ninth with a time of 55.93.

The 800m saw a bevy of Haverford middle distance runners compete as Simon Perales (career-best 2:03.42) finished 13th to lead the squad. Woodhouse followed in 14th (2:03.93). Willig crossed in 24th (career-best 2:08.79), Gandolfo-Lucia finished in 26th (2:12.52), Arthur Chang was 27th (career-best 2:15.13) while Joshua Frye (career-best 2:17.43), Will Hillegas (career-best 2:18) and Steve Gan (career-best 2:19.27) rounded out the slate for the Fords.

In other field events, Jack Brower posted a distance of 1.72m in the high jump while Cameron Albrecht followed with a career-best mark of 1.62m. In the pole vault, Greg Van Aken finished in ninth with a 3.65m mark. Oji posted a mark of 11.6m in the triple jump.

Men's indoor track & field will return to Alumni Field House next weekend for the Keogh Invitational on Saturday, February 18. That meet will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will be the prelude Centennial Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at Ursinus on the final weekend of the month.
