Men's Indoor Track and Field Notches Solid Showing at Keogh Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's indoor track & field team competed in its final tune-up before the Centennial Conference Championships, hosting the Keogh Invitational at the Alumni Field House on Saturday afternoon. Haverford took home the event title in the 4x400 meter relay and also received top times in the 3000m from Henry Woods and Dylan Gearinger as the focus shifted towards NCAA qualifying marks. 

Haverford's 4x400 meter relay squad of Liam Lynch, Alex Frost, Scott Pollara and Zach Oji finished the event in 3:29.83 to take the event title. Lynch also finished second in the 400m (51.54).

Woods finished fourth in a stacked field in the 3000m, behind former teammate All-American Charlie Marquardt '16, regional cross country champion Ernie Pitone and Centennial Conference cross country champion Jaryd Flank.

Woods crossed in 8:25.49, a time that ranks as the 11th fastest in NCAA Division III this season. In fifth place, Gearinger posted a time of 8:33.54, a personal record and the 29th best Division III time this season. Simon Perales crossed in 13th with a personal record time of 9:08.32. Liam Bassett also posted a personal record (10:08.03) in a 30th place finish.

Haverford's success was also headlined by the Eddie Papalia '05 Memorial 800 meter race. The event was named in memory of Papalia, a three-time track & field All-American who graduated from Haverford in 2005. Papalia passed away in June of 2012. Peter Kurtz was the top Haverford finisher in the event (1:58.76) crossing in second to take the memorial trophy.

Kurtz was followed by Greg Morgan (career-best 1:59) in third place. Chris Goings finished fifth in 1:59.55. Ian Woodhouse was ninth in 2:05.14 while Hiroshi Kawakatsu finished 11th in a career-best 2:05.44. Arthur Chang (2:13.54) posted a career-best for a 30th place finish while Joshua Frye (2:16.18) and William Hillegas (2:17.77) also posted their collegiate bests in the distance on Saturday.

Julian Schneider finished fourth in the mile (4:33.05) ahead of Evan Hamilton (4:34.69) in fifth place. Ryan Herlihy was sixth in a career-best time of 4:35.33. James Stadler was seventh in 4:35.49. 

Greg Van Aken finished seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 3.80m. 

Zach Oji posted a career high in the triple jump with a distance of 12.28m for a second place finish. Frost also recorded a career-best mark of 11.21m in fifth place in the triple jump. Oji also competed in the 60m hurdles, finishing ninth (9.90).

In the men's high jump, Jack Brower posted a mark of 1.70m for a fourth place finish while Cameron Albrecht finished fifth with a mark of 1.65m. In the long jump, George Avecillas finished seventh with a distance of 4.41m. Josiah Legaspi finished fourth in the shot put with a distance of 11.65m.

The men's indoor track & field squad will now turn its focus to the Centennial Conference Championships on February 25-26 in Collegeville, Pa. The meet is hosted by Ursinus College. The action gets underway at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday with the Men's Triple Jump while the majority of track events are contested Sunday.
