Morgan Wins 3,000 Meters at Villanova Invitational

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Haverford College men's track & field team posted a solid outing at both the Villanova Invitational on Staten Island and the Frank Colden Invitational at Ursinus on Saturday afternoon. At the Villanova Invitational, senior Greg Morgan took home the 3,000-meter crown with a time of 8:19.73. Morgan bested Zachary Michon of Division I Saint Joseph's by almost two seconds, topping a field that included distance athletes from all three NCAA divisions. 

Senior Graham Peet finished fourth overall with a time of 8:28.14, a new career best in the distance. Senior Ryan Herlihy finished 13th in the stacked field, crossing in 8:40.45, a new career best.

In the 800 meters, first-year Jamie Moreland finished seventh overall in a time of 1:53.88, narrowly missing a top 10 time in indoor program history. The time is within the top 20 in all of Division III so far this season. Moreland was the top Division III finisher in the 800-meter distance at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Complex on Saturday night.  Junior Hiroshi Kawakatsu finished 21st overall with a time of 1:59.41, while senior Ian Woodhouse was 22nd in a career-best 2:00.20. Senior Chris Goings rounded out the Haverford finishers with a 26th-place finish in 2:04.16.

In the mile, sophomore Matt Katz led the Haverford contingent with a 10th-place finish in 4:21.50, a new career best by more than six seconds. Katz was also the top Division III finisher in the distance. Junior James Barker was second with a 12th-place finish in a career-best 4:24.78. First year Nico Tripeny was 16th in a career-best 4:26.21.

In Collegeville, Senior Kofi Acheampong again built on his career-best time, posting a time of 7.23 in the 60-meter dash preliminaries, the second-best mark in program history. Acheampong raced to a ninth-place finish in the finals, crossing in 7.27. In the 200 meters, Achemapong reprised his role with a ninth-place finish in 23.58, a new career-best. Senior Oscar Huang was 24th in 24.46, also a new personal-best in the distance.

Senior Liam Lynch was the top attached finisher in the 400 meters, crossing in 52:09. Huang was 17th in 54.38, a new career best. Senior Peter Kurtz finished 23rd in 54.89, in his first indoor foray into the distance. Junior Conor Madden finished 10th to pace a Haverford contingent in the mile, crossing in 4:32.93. Senior Sam McCalpin was 16th in 4:38.96, a new career best. First year Max Brelig was 17th in 4:39.83. First year Scott Kaiser crossed in 28th (4:44.76), while junior William Hillegas was 39th (4:50.72) and sophomore Nathan Akerhielm was 41st in a career-best (4:51.43).

In the 800 meters, first year Colin Riley finished 29th in 2:09.73 while first year Jacob Gaba was 42nd in 2:17.56. In the 3,000 meters, junior Simon Perales was the top Haverford finisher, crossing in third place with a time of 9:07.95, a new personal best. First year Amos Karlsen was sixth in 9:09.97. Sophomore Oscar Melendez crossed in 12th with a time of 10:00.86, a new personal best.

Junior Steve Gan was Haverford's lone entrant in the 5,000 meters, crossing in 17:06.26, establishing a new career best in the distance.

Senior Rohan Shukla posted a 21st-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.69 meters (18'-8").

Shukla also finished 10th in the triple jump with a mark of 12.02 meters (39'-5"). Sophomore Andrew Lummus was 11th with a jump of 11.58 meters (38'). Senior Zach Oji finished 12th with a jump of 11.13 meters (36'-6").

Senior Jack Brower finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.83 meters (6'-0"). Senior Greg Van Aken finished eighth overall in the pole vault with a mark of 3.80m (12'-5.5").

The Fords will next return to action on Saturday, February 9 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston. The meet is hosted by Boston University, and is one of the most prominent indoor meets on the national schedule this season. Events will begin at 10:30 a.m.
