Men's Outdoor Track & Field Claims Two Championships at West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Haverford College men's outdoor track & field team's weekend at the West Chester Invitational was highlighted by two champions in the only running events the Fords entered on the track. In the field, Haverford contested the hammer throw for the first time in 111 years to complete a successful weekend.

With the addition of a throwing facility on campus that was built over the summer, the Fords have now been able to practice the hammer throw. Robert Parry recorded a top 10 finish in his first attempt at the event. His throw of 115 feet, 11 inches was the first throw since school record holder Harold Jones '1905 competed in the event. Parry came up just seven feet, seven inches short of the school record. Josiah Legaspi (30.48 meters) and George Avecillas (27.77 meters) finished 13th and 14th, respectively, in the event.

Parry also led the Fords in the discus throw with a toss of 114 feet, two inches (34.81) as he placed 13th in that event. Legaspi led the Fords in the shot put with a toss of 11.41 meters as he recorded a 12th place finish. Greg Van Aken rounded out Haverford's field events as he cleared 3.35 meters to place second overall in the pole vault.

On the track, Haverford got wins from Peter Kurtz in the 800 meters and Marcelo Jauregui-Volpe in the 1500 meters. Kurtz won the 800 meters in a time of 1:56.76. Julian Schneider (1:57.95) was fourth overall in the field, while Ryan Gooding (1:58.47), Tyler Fong (1:59.27), and Greg Morgan (2:01.09) were also among the top 10 finishers.

Jauregui-Volpe lead the 1500 meter field to the line as he finished in a time of 4:09.61. Dylan Gearinger (4:12.37) and Graham Peet (4:12.44) placed fourth and fifth overall in the field. Lincoln Satterthwaite also added a top 10 finish as he placed eighth in a time of 4:15.10.

The majority of next weekend's entrants from the men's outdoor track & field team will be in action at the Chester Challenge on the campus of Widener University next Saturday. The one exception will be Charlie Marquardt as he competes near his hometown in the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California.
