CHESTER, Pa. – The Haverford Men's outdoor track and field team battled rainy conditions at the Widener Invitational, as most of the events were conducted in a steady rain that made for cautious conditions in the lead up to the Centennial Conference Championships in early May. The wet weather didn't stop the Fords from competing in a multitude of events, netting top-10 finishes in four events including the 1500m, 800m, 3,000m steeplechase and 4x400 meter relay.
Julian Schneider finished in fourth in the 1500m with a time of 3:59.5 while James Barker was 27th with a time of 4:08.36, a personal best in the distance. Marcelo Jauregui-Volpe was 47th in 4:14.73 while Arthur Chang finished in 78th (4:29.32) and Joshua Frye was 89th (4:34.04) to round out the Haverford contingent in the distance.
In the 800m, Peter Kurtz led the way for the Fords with a seventh place finish. Kurtz crossed in 1:55.05, a new personal best in the distance. Tyler Fong finished in 27th with a time of 1:58.64 while Chris Goings was 33rd in 1:58.94. Hiroshi Kawakatsu just missed a new personal best with a 49th place finish in 2:00.67 and Ian Woodhouse was 61st in a personal-best 2:02.25.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Lincoln Satterthwaite finished in third with a time of 9:47.62, a personal best in the event. Chris Gandolfo-Lucia was sixth in a personal-best 10:01.76 while Matthew Willig was ninth in 10:22.22. Liam Bassett finished in 16th with a time of 10:49.15 and Steve Gan was 24th in 11:55.86.
The Fords 4x400 meter relay squad of Zach Oji, Alex Frost, Kurtz and Liam Lynch took sixth overall with a time of 3:28.36.
In the 100m, Frost finished in 11.69, good for 35th place. Oscar Huang was 64th in 12.33. The 200m saw Frost finish in 23.37, good for a 34th place finish, while Huang was 90th overall in 26.21. Oji finished seventh in the 400m hurdles with a time of 58.35.
In the long jump, Chris Glazer (5.40m) posted a personal best for a 31st place finish while Jack Brower posted a mark of 5.32m for 33rd. Brower recorded a mark of 1.70m in the high jump. Greg Van Aken was ninth in the pole vault with a season-best height of 3.90m.
Haverford will now host the midweek Haverford Invitational with Widener on Tuesday at Johnson Track. The meet is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
