Peet Named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic Performer of the Year to Headline All-Area Team

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College junior Graham Peet has been named the 2018 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Track & Field Performer of the Year. In addition, Peet is one of 11 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Area team, joining teammates Dylan Gearinger, Greg Morgan and Henry Woods. Haverford garnered four selections to the All-Area squad for the first time since the 2006 campaign when Sam Dalke, Zack McCormick, Grant Scott and Boyce Upholt were all honored.

The squad is selected through voting conducted by the sports information offices of 30 institutions in the Philadelphia Metropolitan area. In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, a student-athlete must be in at least their second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better.

Peet adds the Track & Field honor to Co-Cross Country Performer of the Year honors in the fall. Peet, a biology major, was also named the Centennial Conference Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an award presented to a junior or senior member of the All-Centennial Conference team with the highest cumulative grade point average. Peet earned All-America status during the outdoor season as he finished third overall in the steeplechase at the NCAA Division III National Championships. It marked Haverford's highest finish in the event in more than a decade.

Furthermore, Peet became a three-time USTFCCCA All-Mideast Region selection in the steeplechase and also earned All-Centennial Conference first team honors for the first time in the event this year. Peet was a second team honoree in his first two seasons of collegiate competition. In addition to the steeplechase, The Vashon, Wash. product came away with honorable mention All-Centennial Conference in the 5,000 meters.  During the indoor season, Peet garnered All-Centennial Conference second team honors in both the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. He also earned USTFCCCA All-Mideast Region recognition in the 5,000 meters for the second consecutive season.

Gearinger, a CoSIDA Academic All-Region selection, capped an outstanding junior campaign with Mideast Region Track Athlete of the Year honors for the outdoor season. The indoor 3,000-meter national champion emerged as one of the top distance runners in the nation in his junior campaign. Gearinger captured both the 5,000-meter and 10,000 meter titles at the Centennial Conference Outdoor Championships, becoming the conference's Track Performer of the Year in the conference in the process. His outdoor distance double came off the heels of the Indoor Conference Performer of the Year designation and an illustrious junior track campaign that included four Centennial Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week awards and eight total event titles. Gearinger, of Berwick, Pa. also earned All-Mideast Regional honors and First-team All-Centennial Conference during the cross country season, twice picking up Athlete of the Week designation.

Morgan earned an All-America finish in the 1,500 meters at the Division III outdoor championships in May, adding the plaudit to an All-America finish in the indoor mile in March. A three-time first-team All-Centennial selection, the Hollidaysburg, Pa. product has seven All-Mideast Region designations from the USTFCCCA in his time at Haverford. 

Woods repeated the CoSIDA Academic All-District selection from the 2016-17 season after finishing his Haverford career with the Varsity Cup award given to the top overall athlete in the senior class at Haverford. Woods was also awarded a prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship in March, becoming the first cross country honoree from Haverford since both Avi Bregman and Chris Stadler received postgraduate scholarships in 2014. The New Yorker was an All-America selection in cross country for the second-straight season in 2017, helping Haverford to an eighth place finish at the national meet. Woods was also named the Centennial Conference Runner of the Year after capturing the conference's individual crown in October of 2017. A three-time NCAA qualifier in track & field, Woods has now been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team for the last four running seasons.
